Assessment ComponentWeighting External Assessment 70% Paper 1/ Épreuve 1 (1hr 30min.): Receptive skills Interpreting four written texts, based on the CORE 25% Paper 2/ Épreuve 2 (1hr 30min.): Written Productive Skills 250-400 words from a choice of five, based on the OPTIONS 25% Written assignment/ Travail Écrit: Receptive and written productive skills Inter-textual reading followed by paper of 300-400 words plus a 150-200 word rationale, based on the CORE (HL is 500-600 words) 20% Internal Assessment (assessed by teacher and moderated by IB) 30% Individual oral/ Examen Oral (8-10 minutes) 15 min. preparation, 10 minute max. presentation followed by questions and discussion with teacher, based on the OPTIONS 20% Interactive oral activity Three classroom activities assessed by the teacher, based on the CORE 10%

Paper 1 Externally assessed, 25% of total grade Will take place on Tuesday, May 17 th in the afternoon (for all HL, SL, and ab initio) 1 hour 30 minutes long Reading four (SL) or five (HL) texts – arranged from simplest to most complex – and answering questions Based on the CORE topics (social relations, global issues, communication and media) Texts could be interviews, blogs, articles, letters, etc. Questions could be matching, true/false, fill in the blank, short answer, identifying references (ie: pronouns), etc.

Quiz 1. What does Paper 1 of the IB test consist of? Reading four (or five) texts and answering questions about them. 2. Is Paper 1 based on the core or the options? It is based on the core.

Paper 2 Externally assessed, 25% of total grade Will take place on Wednesday, May 18 th in the afternoon (for all) 1 hour 30 minutes long (SL & HL), 1 hour (ab initio) Choose one of five tasks Based on the OPTIONS : (cultural diversity, customs & traditions, health, leisure, science & technology) Each prompt will require a specific format (ie: blog, letter, journal, etc.) HL – “stimulus” text based on the core, responding in any manner you choose. 150-250 words – example of writing and thinking skills

Written Work Externally assessed, 20% of total grade Word-processed, completed independently by the students, and submitted electronically SL: Students will select their own resources. 300-400 words plus a 150-200 word rationale. HL: Based off of one or two works of literature that have some sort of shared correspondance. 500-600 words plus a 150-250 word rationale. Due March 10th

Individual Oral Internally assessed by teacher; externally moderated by the IB 20% of final grade Will take place April 5 th and 6 th (and possibly 7 th and 8 th )

Supervised preparation time Student is shown two photos with title or caption – each one related to different option. Student chooses one of the photos and prepares a presentation. 15 minutes Part 1: Presentation Student describes photo and relates it to the option and the target culture(s). 3-4 minutes Part 2: Discussion Discussion with teacher based on the presentation. Discussion based on the other photo/ topic may be introduced if that contributes to the interaction. 5-6 minutes Individual Oral

Interactive Oral Internally assessed, 10% of total grade Will take place throughout the remainder of the year Based on the CORE Three oral activities will be carried out in the classroom – one must be based on a listening activity The highest of the three grades will be submitted as the final mark for the interactive oral Could take the form of whole-class activities, group or pair activities, or listening activities followed by individual reaction/ interpretation

Assessment criteria for Paper 2 Criterion ALanguage “Good and effective” command of the language Wide range of vocabulary, with few significant errors Some complex sentence structures, clear and effective For a 9 : Simple sentence structure are clear 10 marks Criterion BMessage Message has been communicated well Ideas are relevant Development of ideas is coherent and effective; supporting details are appropriate 10 marks Criterion CFormat Text type is clearly recognizable and appropriate Conventions appropriate to the text type are effective and evident 5 marks Total25 marks * Failure to write the minimum number of words will result in a 1-mark penalty

Assessment Criteria for Paper 2 – Section B (HL) Criterion ALanguage Command of the language is very effective Wide range of vocab is used accurately and effectively, with very few errors Complex sentence structures are clear and effective 10 marks Criterion BArgument Development of ideas is very good and methodical; the argument is convincing Structure of the argument is consistently coherent and organized Ideas are very well expressed, relevant, and engaging 10 marks Total20 marks * Failure to write the minimum number of words will result in a 1-mark penalty

Assessment criteria for Written Work Criterion ARationale and task Students uses rationale and task effectively in order to accomplish the assignment All sources have been fully described Clearly explained aim and how he/she will achieve it Subject stated is focused, relevant to sources, and consistently addressed throughout task Chosen text type is appropriate to audience and purpose is stated in rationale, applied consistently throughout task 10 marks Criterion BOrganization and development Ideas are organized and developed effectively 6 marks Criterion CLanguage Use of language is appropriate and effective Vocab shows good range and is consistently used appropriately to the task Complex sentence structures are clear and effective Rhetorical devices are varied and used effectively 8 marks Total24 marks

Academic Honesty If the IB board gets any indication of cheating, your score will be thrown out.

Homework Tonight: Create a DuoLingo account and add me By tomorrow: Study food vocabulary. Choose three words related to food/eating you would like to know that are not on either of the lists, look them up, and present them in class tomorrow. By Friday: Read chapters 2-3 of L’Etranger.

DOL True/False: 1.The IB test is only reading and answering questions. 2.The written assignment (travail écrit) is done outside of class. 3.For Paper 2, I get to choose between five tasks. 4.For the individual oral, I can write out what I am going to say and read it from the paper. 5.For the individual oral, I will have to speak completely in French by myself for 3-4 minutes.
