8 First, contagious spreading of revolutionary movements predates social media. Second, Granovetter’s renowned thesis on the strength of weak ties is challenged. As weak ties show their strength in certain situations, while this may not be the case in other contexts. Strong ties can be more important in dangerous situations. Third, the mobilization potential of social media is quetioned. Internet access rates, actual number Facebook users in the countries of the Arab spring. Therefore the view that social media was a catalyst of these revolutions cannot be upheld. Fourth, social media-based social movements leave behind digital footprints that authoritarian powers can exploit for the surveillance and oppression of such movements and their members.
