Social Movement Social Movement – goal is to promote of prevent social change; the most structured and rational form of collective behavior. American Revolution Civil Rights Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice Climate Change Gay Marriage

Social Movements Revolutionary Movement – an attempt to change the total structure of society Reformative Movement – an attempt to make limited changes in society Redemptive Movement – seeks to change people completely (Religious cults) Alternative Movement – seeks only limited changes in people (One child policy)

Social Movements Value Added Theory – Certain conditions must exist for social movements to occur (six conditions) Structural Conduciveness – current environment must be social movement friendly Structural Strains – conflicts and discrepancies Generalized Beliefs – recognition and agreement Precipitating Factors – Event to trigger action Mobilization of participants for action – motivated people Social Control – Ineffective or effective social control. Actions of the police, media, courts, political officials, community leaders, etc.
