Greece Where is Greece and why is such an ancient civilization important to us? Greece is located in the Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea, and Ionian Sea Terrain- mountains and plateaus

Greece The mountains and plateaus divided Greece into separate parts Because of the separate parts people who settled in each area became slightly different than people in a different part. Think of Present day USA we have 50 different states, people from each state are a little different than each other.

Engage (Starter) Looking at the geographical map of Greece what natural advantages do the Greeks have in terms of defending themselves from invaders?

Greece City States or Polis dotted the Greek landscape Greeks were very religious people Many gods-Pagan Shared the same values as each other However the lands around Greece were war like and unstable

Greece To defend themselves Greeks used Hoplites Each Polis contained its own hoplite army. The Polis’s themselves developed differently due to being geographically separated.

Greece Athens was democratic they valued education and reason and peace Sparta was a warrior culture, they valued military, tough rugged, education was not a priority.

War The Greeks came into contact with the Persian Empire They even had cities that had been taken by the Persian empire and had tried and unsuccessfully revolted This revolt angered Persian Ruler Darius He decided to invade Greece and did He lost at the Battle of Marathon

Democracy One thing that we still practice today that we took from Greek Culture is Democracy Democracy is a form of government In a democracy the people have the power

Pericles In Athens Pericles helped to usher in Democracy He was repeatedly elected to the Athenian council He helped to extend democracy to citizens of Athens and establish democracy as a good form of government.

Democracy Athenians Practiced Direct Democracy Male citizens (females couldn’t participate) went to a hillside every 10 days each month to decide things for the city Citizens could voice their opinions in these meetings.

Debate time One Essential part of a Democracy is being able to Debate. You will be debating Athens vs. Sparta These were the two most powerful Greek States You will debating which society was better.

Starter Why do people often after achieving success fail, quit, change for the worse? Think of all the famous athletes, musicians, actors etc that have fallen into this category.

End of Greece Athens and Sparta remained the two most powerful city-states. Sparta and Athens were constantly at odds with one another. Neither city state could accept the others values

End of Greece For 66 years Athens, Sparta, Thebes constantly battled with each other and tried to dominate Greece This weakened Greece and they ignored the growing power of Macedonia to the north

Alexander the Great A Macedonian King named Alexander the Great conquered Greece Alexander put an official end to Greece’s independence
