2 Mathematical literacy is defined as “having an appreciation of the value and beauty of mathematics and being able and inclined to appraise and use quantitative information” (NCTM, 2000). Scientific literacy is defined as “being able to read with understanding articles about science in the popular press and to engage in social conversation about the validity of the conclusions” (National Research Council, 1996).

3 Word Questioning Organizer to: state what the word means, recognized parts, and why it is important Frayer Model Organizer to: define the word, give characteristics, and list examples and non-examples Semantic Feature Analysis compare a term with other terms that fall in the same category

4 Key Concept Synthesis Most important ideas/concepts and then explain them and make connections Anticipation Guide Make statements to agree or disagree on While reading, find if it is true or false

5 Write and Toss Write down the concept and toss around room Talk about what is written Real World Writing Write how a concept relates to the real world in a way that the general public could understand

6 The Frayer Model Examples and non-examples are great for visual students Semantic Feature Analysis A great organizer when doing Geometric shapes Write and Toss Great for any class to make sure the students are understanding. No “spotlight.”

7 After reading this article, I have a few more strategies in my bag to help me. These strategies will help in any class or grade I will be teaching. Literacy will be incorporated in all class taught with these new strategies.
