2 Holocaust : The systematic, state-sponsored killing of approximately six million Jewish men, women and children and millions of others by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during WWII(1939- 1945)

3 Definitions Nazi : Abbreviation for National Socialist German Workers Party. Anti-Semitism : Hatred or persecution of Jews.

4 1933 January 30 - The Nazi party takes power in Germany. Hitler becomes chancellor of Germany. March 10 - First concentration camp was at DACHAU. 200 communists made up the 1 st inmates. MAY Books with ideas that were considered dangerous to Nazi beliefs are burned

6 1934 Hitler combines Chancellor position and president to become “Fuhrer” or leader of Germany. Jewish newspapers can no longer be sold in the streets.

8 1935 September 15 - Nuremberg Laws are passed, denying Jews German citizenship and other basic rights.

9 1936 Nazis boycott Jewish-owned businesses Olympic games are held in Germany; signs barring Jews are removed until the event is over. Jews no longer have the right to vote.

11 1938 German troops annex Austria November 9-11: Kristallnacht – “Night of Broken Glass” Nazis terrorized Jews throughout Germany and Austria – 30,000 Jews arrested. Jews must carry ID cards. Jewish children had to attend Jewish schools. Jewish businesses were shut down

13 1939 Germany takes over Czechoslovakia and invades Poland World War II begins as Britain and France declare war on Germany. Hitler orders all Jews to turn in radios, follow curfews and wear yellow stars of David.

15 1940 Nazis begin deporting German Jews to Poland Jews are forced into ghettos Jews are put into concentration camps Nazis begin the first mass murder of Jews in Poland.

18 1941 Germany attacks the Soviet Union

19 1942 Nazi officials discuss the “Final Solution”- Their plan to kill all European Jews. Jews are forbidden to keep electrical equipment, pets or attend school.

20 Death camps These were special concentration camps built with gas chambers and huge incinerators for mass killings and cremation. Built for the “Final Solution” plan. 6 DEATH camps--all located in Poland  Auschwitz  Belzec  Chelmno  Majadanek  Sovibor  Treblinka

22 1943 About 80 percent of the Jews who died in the Holocaust had already been murdered at this point.

23 1944 Hitler takes over Hungary and begins deporting 12,000 Hungarian Jews each day to Auschwitz where they are murdered.

24 Number of deaths— Approximately 11 million … Approximately 6 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust Approximately 5 million non Jewish civilians were murdered during WWII.  Gypsies, Serbs, Polish intellects, resistance fighters, opposition to Nazis, beggars and vagrants, mentally disabled, and others considered unworthy by Hitler and his regime.

25 1945 Hitler is defeated and WWII ends in Europe. The Holocaust is ended and the death camps are emptied. Many survivors are placed in displaced person facilities (refugee camps)

26 1946 At Nuremberg, Nazi Leaders are tried for war crimes by a Judicial assembly.  The United Nations establishes a Jewish homeland in British-controlled Palestine, which becomes the state of Israel in 1948. 1947
