3 But… It’s Critical!  Online technology changes rapidly!  There are too many changes for one person to keep up and be the expert in everything!  Everyone wins in a shared culture of lifelong learning

10 1/4 Relationship First Information Second  Our knowmates learn best when they feel safe to make mistakes;  Their ideas are cherished and valued and assist others in their learning process.  New knowledge is formed, linked and applied to their real life situations  A strong relationship equals relevant and valuable information

11 2/4 Guide on the Side ~ Not ~ Sage on the Stage  No-one person is an expert in everything!  Online programs, software, and technology changes too often for one person to be the only expert  We are equals who learn together  Ideas and contributions are cherished and valued  Every member is an expert in their own area

Constant interaction with people in different phases of learning, keeps things lively!  Different mix of vocations stimulate knowplace  Different things happen all the time!  My thoughts and comments are heard and influence things here  I like the people I see here – I want to keep in touch with them!

13 4/4 Give back to knowplace! A community is only as rich as it’s people and the information shared:  Open Weekend participants are encouraged to lead workshops  Course projects are used to inspire future knowmates  Knowmates are encouraged to mentor Knewbies

22 4/5 Capilano College Program Structure  Eight certificate programs  Each consists of 9 two-week long courses  Courses rotate every five months  Required courses overlap between each certificate program  Our knowmates often take more than one certificate program at a time

23 4/5Capilano College Program Requirements  Knowmates must form, guide and support each other in two ePeer relationships;  eMentors and knowmads support the epeers behind the scenes.

26 Foster, Develop and Support ePeers & eMentors When?  After 4 Capilano College/knowplace courses, or when they feel safe to lead others  Constantly ask people to share their expertise  Immediately thank people in public forums and through private email  Immediate response to questions

27 HOW?  Mentor two knewbies  Knowmates lead topical asynchronous discussions for knewbies, and knowmates  Lead two synchronous chats that knewbies, knowmates attend  Mentor epeer discussions Foster, Develop and Support ePeers & eMentors

28 Where?  Members areas,  Reconnect area,  Safe areas to host projects and activities,  Mailing lists,  Community list serve,  Resource library, polls, asynchronous discussions, synchronous chats, open discussions  Virtual team projects

29 Matching Methods Knowmates are matched to knewbies by: –Degree of familiarity with the online community –Personality requirements (eg: some work better with men than women) –Experienced online communicators with Knewbie We do not include: –Content expertise, –Time zone, –Professions
