2 Bell Work #7 – 5/12-13 Should the United States be involved in the fight against ISIS? Why or why not?

3 Class Answer Freedom isn’t free – so, yes, we should involve ourselves. Yes, we should get involved to help other countries and ourselves… they might already be here. Yes, we should help the people in need (Middle East). No, because if ISIS bombed us the people we are helping wouldn’t help us here in America. Why should we help those people if the help wouldn’t be returned?

4 Background ISIS Answer the following question while watching the video - “Who is ISIS and what do they want?” -ISIS = Islamic State in Iraq and Syria -Military jihadist group (terrorists) -They want their own nation and power

5 Background information Islam broke into two branches – Sunni and Shia (Shiite). From the Sunni branch – came another branch of Islam extremist or radicals called Al Qaeda who is said to be responsible for the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. From Al Qaeda another branch broke off and became ISIS.

6 ISIS – a jihadist group Jihad – to wage holy war on behalf of Islam as a religious duty.

7 ISIS in the Middle East What are the tactics used? -Social Media (hashtags to recruit) -Video/recordings (gain info – spread violence/fear) -Harsh governing -Taking advantage of a war

10 THE THREAT TO THE WORLD Religious/Ethnic cleansing Beheadings and other violence of people from countries who resist ISIS. Recruitment is growing throughout the world Terroristic activities and threats

You and your partner are going to read the Q’s and discuss the A’s – then write your A’s in your spiral. This will give you more background knowledge for your final assignment today.

Why or why not?” There will be no right or wrong answer because its an opinion. I will grade it on accurate facts and support for your opinion. – On a separate piece of paper answer the question using complete, grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs. – Turn it in on your way out.
