●Good oral language is the foundation of reading and writing ●Bedtime stories are very important – builds oral language, increase in known vocabulary, book handling skills ie front of book, left to right, turn page etc ●Join the library if haven’t already

●Children are grouped according to their learning needs - will have group reading at same level while others doing other independent reading or related activities ●Children progress through levels when reading accuracy at least 95% and sounds good - this shows understanding

●Look at pictures - important reading cues for early readers ●Talk about the story thoroughly before reading

●Emphasis on meaning ●Reading should sound easy - as this is what good reading sounds like ●If they are labouring over the text - let the teacher know ●Good retell of book important - ask “You tell me what the story was about” Good indication of their comprehension

●Get mouth ready ●Initially one to one matching but once they have this concept firmly established, stop using finger as will slow their reading ●Let your child hold the book as they are reading - this puts them in control

●If kids are tired - read to them, share a page each, you read main parts and get children to read what is in talking marks ●Find a time that suits your child and family to do home reading - whatever fits ●Mostly have fun with books
