3 The Cardiovascular System The cardiovascular system is comprised of: The Heart Blood Blood Vessels Veins Arteries Capillaries

4 The Heart The heart is the pump that sends blood around the body. Your heart is about the size of your fist and is almost in the center of your chest.

5 The Heart The heart has 2 sides: Right side Left side This is from the first person point of view. What actors call stage right and stage left.

7 The Heart Right Side: pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs (blue) Left Side: pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body (red)

9 Blood Vessels Blood travels throughout your body in tubes called blood vessels. There are 3 types of blood vessels: Arteries = away from heart Veins = to heart Capillaries = deliver blood

10 Blood Circulation Blood move in circuits or loops around the body. Pulmonary Circulation: blood is pumped to and away from the lungs. Systemic Circulation: blood is pumped to and away from the body
