Warm-Up Pick up the notes pack from the side desk and answer the following questions. 1.Name three factors that affect a person’s B.A.C. 2.What type of drug is alcohol? 3. What is a carcinogen? 4.What type of drug is tobacco?

Name three factors that affect a person’s B.A.C. Amount of alcohol consumed Speed at which it is consumed Body weight Percentage of body fat Gender Feelings Amount of food eaten Presence of other drugs in bloodstream Age Drinking carbonated alcoholic beverages

What type of drug is alcohol? Depressant

What is a carcinogen? A substance known to cause cancer

What type of drug is tobacco? Stimulant

Objectives: Parts of blood Learn how the heart works Keeping your heart healthy

Heart FACT Your heart is really a muscle. It's located a little to the left of the middle of your chest, and it's about the size of your fist. Your heart is responsible for pumping oxygenated blood and nutrients to all organs of your body.

Heart Facts It beats 100,000 beats per day 2,000 gallons of oxygen rich blood through 60,000 miles of branching blood vessels

COMPONENTS OF BLOOD The components of blood can be divided into plasma and cells. When blood is placed in a container and spun at high speeds in a process called centrifugation, the heavier and denser cells settle at the bottom while the lighter plasma remains on top.

4 components found in blood 1. PLASMA 2. WHITE BLOOD CELLS 3. PLATELETS 4. RED BLOOD CELLS

A. Plasma… 55% of blood is plasma Mainly water Food Chemicals Waste

B. White Blood Cells Defend the body from disease and bacteria FIGHTERS Eat bacteria before they can harm you

C. Plateletes Responsible for clotting (when you bleed) Create a thread net and RBC’s get caught in it to stop the bleeding

D. Red Blood Cells Pick up oxygen from the lungs and take it to the organs A single drop of blood has MILLIONS of RBCs

Your heart… the PUMP Your heart is sort of like a pump, or two pumps in one. The right side of your heart receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side of the heart does the exact opposite: It receives blood from the lungs and pumps it out to the body.

How can you keep your heart healthy? Remember that your heart is a muscle. If you want it to be strong, you need to exercise it. How do you do it? By being active in a way that gets you huffing and puffing, like jumping rope, dancing, or playing basketball. Try to be active every day for at least 30 minutes! An hour would be even better for your heart! Eat a variety of healthy foods and avoid foods high in unhealthy fats Try to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Avoid sugary soft drinks and fruit drinks. Don't smoke. It can damage the heart and blood vessels.

Color the Heart Activity Color the parts of the heart with a “B” blue… Color the parts of the heart with a “R” red… Now the blood is traveling through the body part delivering oxygen/nutrients and picking up carbon dioxide/waste. Because it is losing the oxygen the blood changes color from bright red to dark red. Blood likes having oxygen so it then finds a capillary represented by our volunteers to connect with a vein that will carry it back to the heart. Remember veins are dark red that can look bluish from the outside, and they take the blood back to the heart.
