3 W ARM -U P #1 Describe what it would be like to go someplace you have never been before. What kind of thoughts are racing through your mind? What emotions are you displaying?

4 P LOT & P LOT D IAGRAMS

5 P LOT Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another. 2 1 3 4 5

6 1-E XPOSITION This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem).

7 2-R ISING A CTION This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

8 3-C LIMAX This is the turning point of the story. Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way.

9 4-F ALLING ACTION All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

10 5-R ESOLUTION The story comes to a reasonable ending.

22 W ARM -U P What is your most important possession, your treasure? How would you feel if it was stolen? Your response should be in paragraph form, containing 5-8 sentences.

23 P LOT D IAGRAM & S UMMARY As a table, complete the plot diagram worksheet. Use complete sentences, when appropriate. On the back of your worksheet, write a short summary (5-8 sentences) of My People. Make sure everyone’s name is on the paper!

30 M OVEMENT T HROUGH T IME Passing of time Must be evident in the plot (and often characters and setting) Use transitional phrases to demonstrate the passing of time Then After Later

31 C HANGE Characters should change throughout the story I.E. they should learn something or change as a result of a situation or a conflict and resolution

32 P OINT OF V IEW (POV) Viewpoint of the story Personal Narratives are in FIRST PERSON Use pronouns such as I, me, we… You are telling the story about what happened to you

33 R EACTIONS How did people react to the event? What did you and the other people do? What did you and the other people say? This makes the story interesting.

34 R EFLECTIONS Why is the story important? What did you and the others learn? Why is the story memorable? Use throughout the story

36 P ERSONAL N ARRATIVE G RAPHIC O RGANIZER Complete the graphic organizer provided Focus on a story that is important to you Be sure to include details

37 W RITING Y OUR P ERSONAL N ARRATIVE Once you have completed the graphic organizer, begin writing your personal narrative Your narrative needs to follow the below guidelines: 1-3 paragraphs in length (5-8 sentences per paragraph) Addresses all the elements of personal narratives Follows proper grammar guidelines Written in complete sentences Whatever you do not finish in class is homework, due tomorrow

40 W ARM -U P Reflect on how 9/11 has changed our lives. How does the memory of 9/11 impact our day to day comings and goings? Your response should be in paragraph form, containing 5-8 sentences.

42 P EER E DITING Process in which your classmates will read and provide feedback on your narrative Be sure that feedback is positive and helpful “This sucks” is neither positive nor helpful “I like the point you are making here; however, it could use a little more detail about the characters and their reactions.” would be a more positive and helpful approach

43 E DITING Y OUR P ERSONAL N ARRATIVES 1. At your table, trade papers and read each others work from beginning to end. 2. Using a different color pen, read their paper again. This time you are providing feedback on the main ideas of their story. 3. Read the paper for a final time looking for grammar and misspellings 4. Return the paper to its owner and discuss the feedback provided.
