G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 20031 Plans for Sci-Fi Prototyping. Contents:- Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Design of the Single Stage Design Issues Still to be Addressed Future Plans This work is being undertaken by Imperial College and Liverpool University physics Department (Peter Cooke), Fermilab (Alan Bross), KEK (Koji Yoshimura), Osaka (Yoshi Kuno, Akiro Sato)

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 20032 Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi The aims of the Single stage prototype will be to:- Prove the feasibility of the design Solve any production problems Try to develop more efficient (and cheaper if possible) construction techniques Ensure that all stages can be made exactly the same Test the efficiency of the light guide connectors Check the spatial repeatability of the support system To create a working detector to allow full system functionality to be developed

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 20033 Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Layout

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 20034 Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Main Criteria for Material Selection Low Xo Non Metallic Stable Manufacturability (preferably in-house) Cost

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 20035 Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Layout of the 5 Stages

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 20036 Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Other points that need investigation/clarification:- The question of which end to Multiplex The ratio of multiplexing (3 or 7 or ?) How to seal at the flanged bulkhead The best way to install and align

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 20037 Design of the Single Stage The aim, as already stated, is to have all the stages the same. This means that there is only one development programme. Further advantages are:- that the amount of spares can be minimum All stages are interchangeable should it be necessary to fit a less efficient stage in a less critical position Production will be easier

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 20038 Design of the Single Stage Basic layout of the stage This exploded diagram shows the components that we use to make up our 1 st model

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 20039 Design of the Single Stage The Model This photograph shows the face of the stage. The fibres are ‘plotted’ onto a sheet of paper which is laminated into mylar (much easier than the real thing)

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 200310 Design of the Single Stage The Model take 2 This photograph shows the rear face of the stage. The fibres come around the radius guide and are made off into connectors

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 200311 Design of the Single Stage The Model take 3 This photograph shows a side elevation and allows us to see the radius guides.

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 200312 Design of the Single Stage What have we gained from the model? A better ‘Feel’ for the stage and how to handle it A list of improvements that need to be made A tool for discussing the material choices and the manufacturing feasibility A way to enable us to visualise the support structure required and where it can be attached

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 200313 Issues Still to be Addressed As it is early days this is quite a long list so I will mention only the main items. I am sure that other items will come to light as the design evolves and being an optimist, some may go away. Detailed design and manufacture of the stages How to lay down the fibres to a known accuracy Detail of the connectors Multiplexing Fixing and sealing into position …………………

G.Barber: Mice Collaboration Meeting 29 March 200314 Future Plans To refine and build a new mechanical model incorporating changes To start the design and development of the tooling for the carbon-fibre structures To develop a reliable fibre-optic connector To develop assembly and installation procedures ???
