Figurative Language Saying something other than what you literally mean for effect

Metaphor Making a comparison between two unlike things WITHOUT using “like” or “as” Ex: She is a walking dictionary. Ex:The classroom was a chaotic jungle.

Simile Making a comparison between two unlike things using “like” or “as” Ex: Her eyes shone like the sun. Ex:The students were as loud as zoo animals.

Personification Giving human characteristics to a non-human Ex: The thunder clapped loudly in the dark sky. Ex: The wind whistled among the trees.

Alliteration Repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning of a word Ex: The rabbits raced around the ranch. Ex:The snake slithered slowly and silently.

Hyperbole Exaggeration for effect Ex: I’m so hungry I could eat an elephant. Ex:I called you a thousand times yesterday!
