4 Test of pre-knowledge Man is mortal/ Man is not immortal. He is honest./He is not dishonest. Karim is too weak to walk/Karim is so weak that he cannot walk I know him/ He is known to me. What is difference between first one and second one. Actually there is no difference between the two in sense/meaning but there form is different.

5 Today’s lesson Changing sentences: Simple/Compound/Complex

6 Learning outcomes At the end of the lesson students will be able to--- ---- a) Detect the simple,compound and complex sentence. b) Make difference them. c) Draw their structures. d) Speak in simple,compound and complex sentences e) learn about clauses.

7 Presentation 1.He is poor (simple sentence) 2.He is poor but( he is) honest (compound sentence) 3.Though he is poor, he is honest (complex sentence) Structures: 1.Simple sentence: 1 sub+1 finite verb 2.Compound sentence: 2 sub+2 finite verb (and,but,or yet,and so,not only----but also,either—or,neither----nor etc.connected with co-ordinating conjunction. 3.complex sentence: 2 sub+2 finite verb ( that, if, as, because, though, although, what, when,where, why,how, who which,whom etc.connected with sub— ordinating conjunction Clauses: A clause is a part of a longer sentence.1 subject and 1 finite verb make a clause.Clause = ½. Sentence=1.Only compound and complex sentences have clauses.Simple sentence has no clause. Example: He is poor but he is honest. p+p=1/2+1/2=compound sentence. Though he is poor,he is honest.s+p=1/2+1/2=complex sentence

8 STRUCTURES 1.SIMPLE SENTENCE= P 2.COMPOUND SENTENCE= P+P (AND,BUT,OR, YET ) 3.COMPLEX SENTENCE= P+S / S+P (THAT,IE,AS,BECAUSE, THOUGH ALTHOUGH WHO, WHICH, WHAT ETC---are used according to meaning of the sentence) Here P means principal clause and s means subordinate clause. Principal clause is principal/main of a sentence and it does not depend on other but subordinate clause depends on the principal clause and it alone cannot express the meaning of the sentence.
