2 HOW THE CIVIL WAR STARTED  In 1861 the civil war started and ended in 1865. It started by the Confederacy were firing on fort Sumter which was won by the Confederacy.

3 MAJOR BATTLES  One of the first major battles in the Civil War was the battle of Bull run near Manassas Junction, Virginia. It was a long battle but the Confederacy finally won the battle. People soon understood that the war would last longer than they had first thought. In September 1862 the Confederates marched into the North. They were met by Union forces at Antietam than on any other day during the war. The Confederates were forced back into Virginia.

4 THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG  Started in July,1 1863 and ended in July,3 1863. Gettysburg was one of the most bloodiest battles and the most popular battles of the Civil war. It involved the most soldiers and was described as the wars turning point.

5 STATES INVOLVED IN THE CIVIL WAR  Their were 23 states involved in the Civil war: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and District of Columbia (D.C).

9 OTHER IMPORTANT FACTS  Civil War was fought on Indian Territory in Oklahoma  Main cause of the Civil War was SLAVERY  Approximately 620,000 soldiers died from combat, accident, starvation and disease during the Civil War.  Aided in the Underground Railroad  Re-enactments are located throughout NC, SC, GA and other states.  Ft. Fisher has a Civil War battlefield where they re-enact scenes from the Civil War  History Channel/Cable stations show several documentaries of the Civil War.  Hollywood has made movies about the Civil War  May books are available about the Civil War  It was sometimes easy to stay a prisoner of the opposing side than to escape.  Picture is of a captured Union soldier
