How many people are affected by eating disorders? 5 % of young women are affected by eating disorders 5 to 10 % of anorexics and bulimics are males 1 to 3 % of middle and high school girls are bulimics 9 million children over age 6 are obese 29% of adults are obese (Almost 1 out of 3)

Eating Disorder Vocabulary Binge – a period of uncontrolled self- indulgence Purge – to remove or empty bowels (using laxatives) Vomit – to remove the contents of the stomach (using syrup of ipecac or self- induced with fingers) Compulsive – an irresistible impulse Obsessive – an unreasonable emotion causing preoccupation

Who can help? Counselor – a person trained to give advice Psychologist – a trained therapist Psychiatrist – a licensed doctor who treats mental illness and can prescribed medication
