What is an ADVERB?? An adverb modifies (or describes) a VERB, an ADJECTIVE, or another ADVERB ONLY!!!! Adverbs add to the meaning of verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs in sentences. Adverbs give more information about: how, where, when, or to what extent

Examples: (Verb) (Adv.) The explorers walked slowly into the cave. (adverb modifying verb) (Adv.) (Adj.) The inside was quite disastrous. (adverb modifying adjective) (Adv.) (Adv.) The leader peered ahead very carefully. (adverb modifying adverb)

WHERE do adverbs appear (in sentences)?

An adverb can be placed before or after the verb it modifies. EXAMPLE: Our eyes gradually adjusted to the darkness. (adverb comes before verb) The small group crept forward.(adverb comes after verb)

An adverb can be placed before or after an adjective (or another adverb). A frequently unknown sound is the flutter of a bat’s wings. (adverb comes before adjective)

An adverb can be placed at the beginning or end of a sentence. Reluctantly, Kim agreed to lead the way. (adverb at the beginning of a sentence followed by a comma) She grasped her flashlight firmly.(adverb at the end of a sentence)
