Dumbest Generation TASK
“Carefully read the following eight sources, including the introductory information for each source. Then synthesize information from at least three sources, and incorporate it into a coherent, well-developed essay that evaluates the claim that those under thirty are “the dumbest generation.”

What do I have to do? Figure out where you stand on the issue (position statement) What one text stands out as one you want to “speak to”? Write a letter to that author either supporting or arguing against her/her central claim. use OTHER sources to bolster YOUR ideas (support/refute; claim/counterclaim)… this is essentially an argument essay in different form.

What will this look like?
“Once I was a scuba diver in a sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet ski.” Dear Mr. Carr, I’m writing to you because I feel your claim that the internet weakens our ability to concentrate is a bit unfair. I am aware many people claim Generation Y, those under the age of 30, are “the dumbest generation.” Many critics claim that we do not know facts, have shaky foundations of “classic knowledge,” and simply will not know how to function in the world without this knowledge set. Technology plays a major role in the debate as well. Some question if Generation Y is over-reliant on modern technology, while others claim that the technology is an inherent part of who we are and how we function in the world. With all this said, I’d like you to consider that though technology has potential to erode concentration and is, in fact, a major distraction to youth today, our ability to use technology for good far surpasses the negative aspects you point out. …… here is my evidence…. I realize there is evidence to the contrary, but here’s why my point is actually better…. …. in closing, I’d like you to think about…. Sincerely, Erica DeVoe
