-Summer Olympics style athletic events. -Originated in California as fitness challenge. -Held every two years. -Previous sites include Belfast, Stockholm, Indianapolis, NYC, etc. 2 WHAT ARE THE WPFG GAMES?

-10 days from June 26 through July 5, 2015. -60+ sports at 50+ sites, 1200 medal events, 10,000 participating athletes + family. -Opening Ceremony at RFK Stadium. -Memorial Ceremonies (Police & Firefighter). -Athlete and family evening events. -Closing Ceremony at WolfTrap. 3 FAIRFAX 2015 EVENTS:

CHALLENGE : -Previous WPFG events held in urban cities. -NCR urban, suburban, rural environments. -NCR mass transit designed to move commuters in and out of D.C. -Limited area parking. -50+ scattered venue sites. -Decentralized rooming / Olympic Village. -Finite resources. 4

-Hotel contracted in clusters. -Shuttle hubs created near hotel clusters. -Sport venue sites assigned to hubs. -Athletes informed of assigned hubs. -Multiple transport resources contracted. -Parking capacity issues evaluated/mitigated. -Outreach to area partners. -Messaging. 5 PLANNED RESPONSE :

2015 WPFG END RESULT: 16 -Overall positive reaction and reviews. -Seen as responsive to planned and unplanned needs. -NCR proved to be a good host for future events. -Communicating game adjustments could be more robust. -Early support staff. -Use of ITS would have been beneficial.

HIGHLIGHTS: -Know your available resources. -Expect adjustments. -Use existing (successful) protocols. -Partner early with others. -Train, drill, exercise your discipline. -Stay focused on your mission – let others do theirs. -Expect resolutions at the level they occur. -Transportation Citizen Corps (hub mgrs, etc.) …? 17
