Today’s Agenda Bell-ringer Timeline Activity Effects of Alcohol on the body notes Cost of Alcohol Activity
2
PAIR / SHARE: Do you think our school has a problem with kids drinking alcohol ? What % of Freshmen do you think drink?
3
WHAT IS ALCOHOL? A powerful and addictive drug Depressant: What happens when you drink alcohol? Enters the bloodstream Is broken down in the liver As much as possible, depending how much you drink Circulates throughout the body
4
ALCOHOL COMES IN MANY FORMS Beer Malt Beverage Wine Energy Drink Liquor Pun Each type of alcoholic beverage has a different concentration of alcohol SO different amounts are considered ‘1 drink’
5
It arises naturally from carbohydrates: fermentation. Beer, wine and other liquor contain different amounts of alcohol (Proof) Proof: 100 = 50%, 40= 20% Wine has around 8-14% Beer has around 4-6%
6
EFFECTS ON THE BODY BRAIN AND CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM First effected : Thinking, judgment and reasoning abilities More drinking leads to : Breathing and reflexes are impaired Alcohol works as an ANESTHETIC, gradually numbing the senses
8
.00 -.04% : slightly affected (.02 is legally intoxicated for teens!).05 -.07% : impaired.08 -.25% : intoxicated.26 -.40% : lose control, passed out.40% + up : coma (or dead) judgment Ho w many adults do you hear about getting alcohol poisoning? Unlike other drugs, alcohol dissolves in both water and fat, Its high solubility in water makes it one of the most potent depressant of human CNS. Alcohol is absorbed into cells and tissues the way water soaks into a sponge.
10
STOMACH This is where some alcohol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream Alcohol stimulates the stomach to secrete more acid Heavy use can lead to ULCERS and even CANCER!
11
LUNGS Some alcohol is exhaled through the breathing process. This is why you can smell alcohol on a person’s breath Exceptionally high alcohol levels can result in unconsciousness, coma and even death through the suppression of the brain's breathing center, the cerebellum.
12
LIVER Alcohol is oxidized or metabolized by the Liver Alcohol is typically broken down at a pace of 1 drink per 1-2 hours Long-term heavy drinking : Fat accumulates in the liver Eventually become non-functional due to scar tissue Cirrhosis This is the 6th leading cause of adult deaths in the United States.
13
*LONG-TERM EFFECTS: Cirrhosis of liver. Cancers of body organs, heart disease, ulcers, and early death. 1 out of 10 people in the U.S. who drink become alcoholics!. -Approximately 14 million people in the U.S. are addicted to alcohol or abuse alcoho.l -Alcohol is the third leading cause of the preventable deaths in the United States. 6
15
KIDNEYS Alcohol is a diuretic Drinking alcohol on a hot day greatly increases the likelihood of dehydration
16
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM VASODILATOR Opens up blood vessels, especially those close to the surface of the skin Gives drinkers a feeling of warmth, even though their body temperature may be dropping
17
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM Alcohol decreases the production of the male sex hormone testosterone. Women who drink during pregnancy risk giving birth to an infant with Fetal Alcohol System (FAS), a disorder that causes heart malformation, joint problems, growth deficiencies and mental retardation.
18
HOW DOES ALCOHOL TRAVEL THROUGH THE BODY? Once alcohol reaches the stomach it begins to break down the alcohol dehydrogenate enzyme. (Women produce less) 20% of the alcohol then enters the blood. Alcohol is then absorbed in the upper portion of the small intestine.
19
HOW DOES ALCOHOL TRAVEL THROUGH THE BODY? The alcohol-laden blood then travels to the liver via the veins and capillaries of the digestive tract. The liver cells are the only cells in our body that can produce enough enzyme to oxidize alcohol at a decent rate. Alcohol effects all organs, but its most dramatic affect is on the liver.
20
BRAINSTORM … Group 1: Why do people use alcohol? Group 2: Reasons people don’t use alcohol? Group 3: Problems associated with Alcohol use and abuse.
