6 Bluetooth wireless technology is a short- range communications technology intended to replace the cables connecting portable and / or fixed devices while maintaining high levels of security. It is designed to be used to connect both mobile devices and peripherals that currently require a wire. Simplifying communications between : - devices and the internet. - data synchronization.

7 Bluetooth was named after a tenth-century king, Harald Bluetooth, King of Denmark and Norway. Bluetooth is an anglicized version of Harald Blaatand, who was known for his unification of previously warring tribes from Denmark where the Bluetooth technology was invented. Bluetooth likewise was intended to unify different technologies, such as personal computers and mobile phones. The Bluetooth logo merges the Germanic runes analogous to the modern Latin letters H and B : (for Harald Bluetooth) (Hagall)  and (Berkanan) merged together, forming a bind rune.

8 Eliminates cables. Inexpensive. Easy to set up and use. Readily available. Good security. Device compatibility.

9 The Bluetooth specification defines a uniform structure for a wide range of devices to connect and communicate with each other. Each channel is divided into time slots 625 microseconds long. Packets can be up to five time slots wide. Data in a packet can be up to 2,745 bits in length.

10 Class 3 radios – Range up to 1 meter or 3 feet. Class 2 radios – Range upto 10 meter or 30 feet (most commonly found in mobile devices). Class 1 radios – Range upto 100 meters or 300 feet primarily used in industries.

11  Bluetooth is a standard for tiny, radio frequency chips that can be plugged into many devices. This chips takes all the information and transmit it at a special frequency to something called a receiver Bluetooth chip. The information is then transmitted to your device.

12 1 Mbps for Version 1.2 Up to 3 Mbps supported for Version 2.0 How fast is it ? The most commonly used radio is Class 2 and uses 2.5 mW of power. Bluetooth technology is designed to have very low power consumption. How about power ?

13 Bluetooth enabled electronic devices connect and communicate wirelessly through short-range, adhoc networks known as Piconet. Each device can simultaneously communicate with up to seven other devices within a single Piconet. Each device can also belong to several Piconets simultaneously. Piconets are established dynamically & automatically as Bluetooth enabled devices enter and leave radio proximity.

14 Infrared – not at all. WiFi – possibly, but not likely. Bluetooth does operate in the 2.4 GHz band like 802.11b and 802.11g, but it uses frequency hopping instead of direct sequencing. Any possible interference would be very short- lived.

15 Wireless (No Cables). No Setup Needed. Low Power Consumption (1 Milliwat). Industry Wide Support.

16  Short range (10 meters).  Small throughput rates. Data Rate 1.0 Mbps.  Mostly for personal use (PANs).  Fairly Expensive.
