4 Belief precedes Action Judaism does not have a clear path to salvation No clear belief in heaven or hell Ethical monotheism 10 Commandments Follow the 532 laws of Moses Islam salvation is based on good works versus bad works- scale Qu’ran Follow the 5 pillars of faith

5 Belief precedes Action Buddhism- riding ourselves of the illusions of life End all desires leads to an end of suffering Follow the 8 fold path Follow the 4 noble truths Do not concern ourselves with the question of heaven or hell Hinduism welcomes relativism Believes that all paths lead to the universal soul Monism- no separation between God/man Moksha- unity with the universal soul Salvation through caste system and reincarnation

6 Belief precedes Action Sin separates God and man God is holy God is love Trinity- Father, Son and Spirit Salvation is clear through faith in Christ: – Judgment of all sin on Christ’s cruxifiction – Resurrection of Jesus – Relationship with God through Christ Faith in Jesus unites God and man Clear eternal destination: heaven or hell

7 Essential beliefs: Romans 3-4  God is one- Ethical Monotheism  Old Testament prophets and sacrificial system Jesus  Justification- God imputing to believers Christ’s righteousness, provided by grace and appropriated through faith  “Justified” present tense means “keep on being declared righteous”; legal term  Redemption in Greek means “a ransom payment”  A purchasing of the sinner and setting him free  God had to deal with sin and He did through Christ’s crucifixion

8 Essential beliefs: Romans 3-4  “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement through faith in his blood.”  Propitiation- “sacrifice of atonement” is a weak translation  Definition- appeasing someone who is angry, usually by a gift  Biblical definition- satisfying of God’s holy Law  God must be perfectly consistent with Himself  He cannot break His own Law or violate His own nature  God is Love; God is Holy  Only Jesus’ blood can satisfy God’ Law  Jewish Day of Atonement- Leviticus 16- demonstrates  Redemption and Propitiation  2 goats: 1 sacrificed and 1 set free

9 Essential beliefs: Romans 3-4 Romans 3:26: “God purpose in the redemptive and propitiatory death of Jesus Christ was so He could be seen to be just and the One who justifies the man who has faith in Jesus” Chapter 4: It is all about faith…not works

10 Know what you believe so you can defend the faith and bring light into a fallen world glorifying our God
