Slide 4 History 2000: Collaborative HPC initiative among computational scientists. 2001: DST recognised potential and importance and invited CSIR as a partner. 2004: DST appoints scientific advisory committee and develop business plan. 2005: The CHPC incorporated into CSIR's Meraka Institute. 2006: Refurbishment of Rosebank Campus. 2007: Official launch by the Minister in June.

Slide 5 National Facility Shared Facility (University and Research Organisations) Commodity HPC Clusters Single Desktops Integrated Effort with Universities Assist the users to utilise more computational resource in their research  University-based computational facility forms an important link. Assist the developers to popularise their innovation

Slide 9 Platform - Phase I  Eight of the cluster nodes are equipped with ClearSpeed accelerator cards;  Each cluster node is equipped with 16GB of DDR2 667MHz random access memory;  The cluster's high speed interconnect is Infiniband 4X SDR via HTX, with equipment from Voltaire and PathScale;  Shared storage capacity of 54TB.  Clustered 165 compute nodes - each with two duo core AMD Opteron 2.6GHz Rev. F processors (i.e 660 CPUs in total, Approx 2.5 TF):  Two P690 SMP machines:  32 x 1.9GHz Power4+ CPUs and at least 32GB of RAM each

Slide 10 “Blue Gene 4 Africa” oResolving grand challenges found within Africa. oEnhance Africa computational research output. (In principle, no cost involved for academia research) oIBM donate a Blue Gene L (1024 CPUs, Approx. 14 TF). IBM – CHPC Partnership oCHPC provides sustainability.

Slide 11 Mission and Objectives of the CHPC CHPC Own Research Units Affiliated Research Units

Slide 12 Key to Success: Partnership with the SIGs Creating Support and Common Ground Assisting the researchers to resolve scientific and technical hurdles. Enabling the communities to help each others. National License SIGs prioritize the software requirements and advice the CHPC on implementing national license. National Mirror Site Storage for selected SET projects (currently under feasibility study). Computational Cycle Providing CPU cycles and other eInfrastructure to the researchers.

Slide 13 Training and Education Teaching/ conferencing room: Teleconferencing audio-visual facility Training lab: Linux Ubuntu platforms Workshops: SIG workshop sponsorships CHPC core workshops Exchange Programmes: Visiting researchers (Sabbaticals) Student/research exchange programmes

Slide 14 Visualisation Lab Visualization Lab: Currently under construction (procurement finalised) Visualization Research: Scientific visualisation, outreach and filming industry
