Incident Update Mugging in Krakow – Need to be aware of this risk when traveling Though this is a risk in the UK too! – Difficulties in submitting an incident report to SHE Enterprise – Also raises the question of travel insurance Queried Mike Evason on this… – Use Key Travel where possible as this ensures everything is in place. – If booking some other way, contact Mike with details of the trip to ensure cover.

Safety Codes There is something of a push to complete the following codes: – Lone working – PUWER (Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations) Feedback is being solicited on these. If you would like to review work in progress please let me know.

Building wardens and safety tour membership We have had volunteers for building wardens in R1 1 st and 2 nd floors – Thankyou everyone, I think we are OK on this now. – But we still need to think of how the labs are covered. It was suggested last time that a member of SHE Group could fill out safety tour membership – SHE Group are likely to come along but this is in addition to departmental reps. – We need members of the department to take an active role in safety inspection. – Safety tour coming in the next month or so.

Responses to Audits We have a list of recommendations from – Recent all-codes audit – Several earlier audits Matt from SHE Group will be meeting with DW about this v. soon (I can’t make the meeting) For each of these we need to decide whether to accept or reject – we then report this to SHE group – Those we accept, we turn into actions – Those we reject, we give a reason I have set up actions in our SHE Improvement Play to reflect audit recommendations Which brings us to…

PPD SHE Improvement Plan I emailed a draft of the SIP to senior staff yesterday. This is a short document focusing on actions to address audit recommendations. Need to get this finalised and signed off ASAP. Body of actions are over the next couple of slides.

Actions on SHE Improvement Plan #1 Report quarterly to senior staff on who has outstanding SHE training in the department. Ensure line management know who needs training and that this is important. Respond to all actions from previous audits Have 2 safety tours, at least one of which includes a member of SHE group. Create a plan for auditing all risk assessments in PPD to ensure that they are suitable and sufficient (and specific).
10
Actions on SHE Improvement Plan #2 Ensure actions from past safety tours are all completed by following up on individual actions. Have discussion based on report from SHE group in senior staff meetings at least twice. Identify staff who need IOSH Managing Safely training and provide list to SHE group. Appoint person responsible for pressure and vacuum systems in the department. All group leaders to assess needs for working at height training for their reports and provide details to RH.
11
Feedback/Suggestions Received on SHE Improvement Plan Report outstanding SHE actions to SS meetings. Ensure a SHE group visit to CERN and ILL. More positive language in the plan’s background. Make an objective to continue with using SS meetings to discuss SHE. Educate & promote incident reporting at next full staff meeting Applicability to overseas sites? Understanding safety standards elsewhere.
