Equilibrium & the Human Body
5
Equilibrium: a state of balance or equality between opposing forces When a new condition is introduced into the system, an adjustment may be necessary for the system to come to equilibrium Homeostasis: the ability of the organism’s body to seek and maintain a condition of equilibrium or stability within its internal environment
6
Other Types of Imbalances Weather imbalances occur in nature too The ecosystems must keep an equilibrium also Unit 4 we saw this with the food webs and species extinction
7
Equilibrium & the Human Body What are some examples of the human body achieving homeostasis?
8
Homeostasis and the Human Body Sweat Fever Chills Diabetes – Sugar or Insulin pH Vitamins Hydration
9
Cousin Tilly & Menopause What is menopause?
10
Cousin Tilly & Menopause What treatments exist for menopause? Why do we “treat” it anyway?
11
Treatments Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Increased risk of heart disease Soy Contain phytoestrogens Bioidentical Hormone Therapy Custom formulas that mimic chemicals in your body Wild Yam, Cohash, Valerian Root
12
Why Do We Treat? If menopause is a natural process, why do we treat it? Avoid or relieve symptoms like mood swings, hot flashes, and thinning hair Working to achieve homeostasis quicker!
13
Cousin Tilly & Menopause How safe and effective are these treatments?
14
Safety Mixed reviews on HRT Should be taken for the shortest time possible Natural is better
15
Cousin Tilly & Menopause What are the drawbacks to these treatments? What happens when we stop treatment?
16
Cousin Tilly & Menopause If Tilly has been a smoker all her life, how might this alter her transition through menopause?
17
Statistics on Cigarettes Symptoms will increase Women who smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day are 40% more likely to enter menopause early (1-2 years) About 20% of all deaths from heart disease in the U.S. are directly related to cigarette smoking. That's because smoking is a major cause of coronary artery disease
18
Cousin Tilly & Menopause Why are hot flashes are very rare among Japanese women?
19
Soy Research indicates that soy, a significant element in the traditional Japanese diet, may be useful in preventing hot flashes in women. Edible beans, especially soybeans, contain the compounds genistein and daidzein, which are estrogenic and help control hot flashes. That may explain why only 7 percent of menopausal Japanese women suffer from hot flashes, as compared to 55 percent of women living in the United States Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/019538.html#ixzz1lc5gWWLzhot flashessoybeanswomenUnited States http://www.naturalnews.com/019538.html#ixzz1lc5gWWLz
20
Aging Male Syndrome (AMS) Myth or reality? What is Aging Male Syndrome?
21
AMS Men go through AMS between the ages of 35 and 65 (normally between 40 and 55) when their hormone levels (especially testosterone) go down. Decline in testosterone can affect a man's body. AMS has many signs: Feeling fat/weight gain Problems sleeping Feeling irritable or angry Loss of motivation Loss of drive at work Nervousness Problems with memory and concentration Indecisiveness Lower self-confidence Tiredness Muscle loss Increased urination Depression Mood swings Loss of energy Bone loss Hair loss

Unit 6 Project Preview When it comes to goods, services, and food geographic boundaries no longer exist. Everything and anything is available for consumption year-round at your local grocery store. Coffee from beans imported from Columbia Steaks from Argentina This global market comes with potentially major ecological and economic impacts (both positive and negative). How much fuel was spent transporting these products across the ocean? Were any pesticides used? If so, was it done in a sustainable fashion? Were forests cleared to make room for grazing herds or larger agricultural fields? What were the wages for the local workers and what are their alternative sources of income?
24
Unit 6 Project Preview Answer the following in a 1,000 word paper: List all of the components of two of your meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner). List each component’s country / state of origin. List where you purchased the products from. Consider the chain of events that took the product to get from the farm/laboratory to your table. List at least 2 benefits of the global market. Why are these benefits? What are the short-term and long-term considerations? List at least 2 negative impacts of this global market Why are these negative impacts? What are the short-term and long-term impacts?
25
Unit 6 Project Preview Answer the following in a 1,000 word paper (continued): Consider the phrase “Think Globally, Act Locally.” What does it mean to you? Has your research on the global market changed the way you will choose goods in the future? Why or why not?
26
Unit 6 Project Preview 1000 word minimum requirement Use APA formatting Due Tuesday of Unit 6 Research is necessary Cite any resources that are used in your project No more than 10% of the paper should be quoted material Be sure to provide all of the information / answer all questions required in the assignment! Make a connection between each question Review the grading rubric in the syllabus

Unit 5 Project Review Conduct a virtual lab! http://chemconnections.org/Java/molecules/index.html Note – you need to have Java installed on your computer to conduct this experiment. Click on the Demonstration window Be patient! This might take a while to load as you go through the lab. Follow the directions within the lab and record your observations for each step (be thorough and specific).
29
Unit 5 Quiz Review Questions to Answer How does lowering temperature change the speed at which molecules move? How would adding more molecules affect the motion inside the chambers? Explain the effect temperature appears to have on the equilibrium of mixing. Compare what would happen if you put a spoonful of honey into a cup of 200°F tea vs. an identical cup filled with 45°F tea. If you opened up a container of stinky Limburger cheese at 1 end of an empty large outdoor parking lot with a group of shoppers about 50’ away, would you be able to enjoy eating your snack longer without offending the shoppers in the summer or winter?
