BlueNet @ JCU Australian Marine Science Data Network

What is BlueNet? A new project initiated by the University of Tasmania. It is about Marine Data It’s archiving and preserving datasets It’s creating a searchable database that allows those datasets to be found It’s creating consistent information about Marine data (the metadata)

About BlueNet BlueNet was established to address the fact that while many universities in Australia gather marine data, there is no easy way to share the information about the research. That can lead to unnecessary duplication of effort. Funded through the Backing Australia’s Ability program managed by DEST.

Central Aim of BlueNet Provide a data management, discovery and access system that will facilitate maximal use of the collective national investment in marine science research.

To Achieve that Aim BlueNet will 1.Build an online repository for Marine data. 2.Provide secure long-term data storage. 3.Provide infrastructure to enable universities to become part of the AODCJF’s network 4.Add value to marine research by improving data management, discovery and access

1. Online repository for marine science data Benefits for researchers Easier access to information from a wider ranges of sources Identification of potential collaborators Wider dissemination of research results and researcher profiles

2. Secure archiving facility Benefits for researchers Long-term storage and management of datasets in secure systems Controlled access to datasets with researcher defined restrictions

Archiving the data Fulfils the JCU requirement for archiving data as outlined in the “STATEMENT AND GUIDELINES ON RESEARCH PRACTICE” “Data must be held for sufficient time to allow reference. For data that is published this may be for as long as interest and discussion persists following publication. It is recommended that the minimum period for retention is at least 5 years from the date of publication but for specific types of research, such as clinical research, 15 years may be more appropriate.” http://www.jcu.edu.au/div2/rido/resprac.pdf

What forms of data will be archived? Computer files CD/DVD Paper copy Maps Video tape Anything else?

Tools for BlueNet To enable researchers to use BlueNet, two tools have been developed. 1.Web portal Searchable portal for all Australian marine data 2.MEST (Metadata Entry and Search Tool) Desktop tool for entering the metadata records
