Wheel and axle: a larger wheel connected by a small axle and is fastened to the wheel so that they turn together. Pulley: a wheel that usually has a groove around the outside edge. This groove is for a rope or belt to move around the pulley. Inclined plane: sloping surface, such as a ramp. An inclined plane can be used to change the effort of moving loads. Wedge: two inclined planes joined back to back. Wedges are used to cut material. Lever: can help lift a heavy weight with much less effort. A lever consists of a rod, which balances on a fixed point. The heavy object that has to be moved or lifted is called the “Load” - the point at which the rod is fixed is called the “Fulcrum”. Screw: a pointed nail with grooves in it. This thread of grooves is an inclined plane.
