1 INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS UPDATE K-6, 9-12 Common Core State Standards Math Recommendation April 2, 2015

2  August/September all call for teacher participation  29 teachers across K-6, all sites represented  Met with K-5 & 6 th grade team K-6 MATH PILOT PROCESS

3 During the initial meeting:  Developed district lens:  Demographic Data  Achievement Data  Determined non-negotiable for curriculum program  Math content & alignment with CCSS standards  Program Organization  Assessment System  Universal Access K-6 MATH PILOT/ADOPTION PROCESS

4  Programs Piloted:  K-2 EveryDay Math 20166 th : Big Ideas 14/15  K-6 Math in Focus  K-6 EnVision Not available for pilot:  K-6 TPS Publishing 3-6 EveryDay Math 2016  Training provided for all programs  Each teacher piloted 2 programs K-6 MATH PILOT PROCESS

5  March 10, 2015: K-5 March 11, 2015: 6 th grade  Used CCSESA tool for analyzing programs  Math content & alignment w/standards  Program Organization  Assessment  Universal Access  Teachers worked in pairs or trios  Came together as a grade level  Sticky dot consensus in grade levels  Consensus conversation as a whole K-6 MATH PILOT PROCESS

6 TPS: Did not rate on any of the 4 elements Math in Focus: Kindergarten rated in 2 elements EnVision: Rated in all 4 elements for 3-6 th grade EveryDay Math 2016: Wasn’t available for pilot, materials not available for all students until Spring 16, not on CDE list 6 th Grade Big Ideas: Did not rate on any of 4 elements K-6 RECOMMENDATIONS

7 “Envision explained hard subjects in easy ways.” – Asher, 6 th grade “Envision made math so much better that is usually is” – Keane, 6 th “Envision: I selected this program because I find it really good that work in groups and the video helped me understand.” - Ana, 6 th “Envision: because it makes more sense to me.” – 6 th, unknown “Envision: because I learn more.” – Ben, 6th K-6 STUDENT VOICE

8 Consensus recommendation: EnVision Area of concern:  Acceleration for high achieving students both in and out of AIM How concern is being addressed:  EnVision specialist will meet with AIM teachers and other teachers to address concern and provide curriculum options  Professional Growth K-6 RECOMMENDATION

9  September all call for teacher participation  7 teachers across 9-12  Programs Piloted:  College Preparatory Mathematics  Carnegie  Math Vision Project  Training provided for all programs, except MVP  Each teacher piloted 2 programs 9-12 INTEGRATED MATH PILOT PROCESS

10 Math Vision Project: Only a supplemental program, not a complete program College Preparatory Math: Met all 4 elements Carnegie: Did not meet any of the 4 elements Big Ideas Int. Math I: not available for complete pilot, full program not available until late summer 9-12 RECOMMENDATION

11 DSHS - class of 62, 58 students voted for CPM Harper– majority of students didn’t like the Carnegie textbook. More positive comments for the CPM text. Carnegie: “very repetitive” “Okay, but not great.” “The math book was tedious.” CPM: “I like it because of how they word the problems.” “It’s really good.” 9-12 STUDENT VOICE

12 Consensus Recommendation: CPM Areas of Concerns:  Parent/Student Support  Parent Guide purchased to support parents/students  Test Generator  Being updated but will need to look at other options i.e. Illuminate, Kuta  Substitute Ready  Use parent guide for lesson, provide different plans for the substitute  Struggling Student Support  Pacing allows for more time on concepts  Look at supplemental program for students that repeat course 9-12 RECOMMENDATION

13  Materials for programs have been available for review at District Office  EnVision & College Preparatory Mathematics materials will be at each school library for continued public comment & review  Comment form will be provided  Communication will go out in school newsletters and district website updates  Announcement in Enterprise  Parent announcement COMMUNICATION

14  May 7, 2015 bring back to BOE for approval/adoption  May 8-11 Order materials for June delivery  Professional development scheduled for:  June  July  August  Ongoing throughout school year NEXT STEPS
