3 POINT OF VIEW IN POETRY POET 4 The poet is the author of the poem. SPEAKER 4 The speaker of the poem is the “narrator” of the poem.

4 POETRY FORM 4 FORM - the appearance of the words on the page 4 LINE - a group of words together on one line of the poem 4 STANZA - a group of lines arranged together A word is dead When it is said, Some say. I say it just Begins to live That day.

5 KINDS OF STANZAS Couplet=a two line stanza Triplet (Tercet)=a three line stanza Quatrain=a four line stanza Quintet=a five line stanza Sestet =a six line stanza Septet=a seven line stanza Octave=an eight line stanza

6 RHYME 4 Words sound alike because they share the same ending vowel and consonant sounds. 4 (A word always rhymes with itself.) LAMP STAMP á Share the short “a” vowel sound á Share the combined “mp” consonant sound

7 INTERNAL RHYME 4 A word inside a line rhymes with another word on the same line. Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary. From “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe

8 NEAR RHYME 4 a.k.a imperfect rhyme, close rhyme 4 The words share EITHER the same vowel or consonant sound BUT NOT BOTH ROSE LOSE á Different vowel sounds (long “o” and “oo” sound) á Share the same consonant sound

9 RHYME SCHEME 4 A rhyme scheme is a pattern of rhyme (usually end rhyme, but not always). 4 Use the letters of the alphabet to represent sounds to be able to visually “see” the pattern. (See next slide for an example.)

10 SAMPLE RHYME SCHEME The Germ by Ogden Nash A mighty creature is the germ, Though smaller than the pachyderm. His customary dwelling place Is deep within the human race. His childish pride he often pleases By giving people strange diseases. Do you, my poppet, feel infirm? You probably contain a germ. aabbccaaaabbccaa

11 REFRAIN 4 A sound, word, phrase or line repeated regularly in a poem. “Quoth the raven, ‘Nevermore.’”

12 SOME TYPES OF POETRY WE WILL BE STUDYING

13 Color Poetry 4 Choose a color and describe it or list things that color. Green Green comes from trees standing tall and straight. Green as jello. Green for St. Patrick’s Day. Green is for Christmas. Green is the color of my bedroom. Green is my favorite color.

14 HAIKU A Japanese poem written in three lines Five Syllables Seven Syllables Five Syllables An old silent pond... A frog jumps into the pond. Splash! Silence again.

15 Question Poetry 4 Choose a topic and write questions about it. It can be rhyming or free verse. Flower Oh, Flower Why are you drooping? Why are your leaves hanging down? Why do you look so dry? Did someone forget to water you?

16 I Remember Poem 4 Write a list of things that is remembered about a person, place or thing. MOTHER I remember my mother. I remember her dark hair and smile. I remember her whispering to me To be quiet when we went to the library.

17 CINQUAIN 5 Line Poem Line 1: Subject Line 2: two adjectives Line 3: Three action verbs ending in –ing Line 4: A short sentence about the subject. Line 5: Synonym for the subject. Cathy cheerful, truthful e-mailing, calling, eating friend for 20 years best bud

18 FREE VERSE POETRY 4 Unlike metered poetry, free verse poetry does NOT have any repeating patterns of stressed and unstressed syllables. 4 Does NOT have rhyme. 4 Free verse poetry is very conversational - sounds like someone talking with you. 4 A more modern type of poetry.

20 CONCRETE POEMS 4 In concrete poems, the words are arranged to create a picture that relates to the content of the poem. Poetry Is like Flames, Which are Swift and elusive Dodging realization Sparks, like words on the Paper, leap and dance in the Flickering firelight. The fiery Tongues, formless and shifting Shapes, tease the imiagination. Yet for those who see, Through their mind’s Eye, they burn Up the page.
