AUGUST 13, 2014 Unit 1 Lesson 1 I can write expressions using powers
3
Big Question Why is it helpful to write numbers different ways??
4
Finding the pattern… Factor Product 3 × 3 9 3 × 3 × 3 27 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 Each group will be assigned a different factor, 2, 6, or 10. Each group will complete a table up to 5 factors.
5
Power Use a power to write the product of multiplying a number by itself repeatedly. Examples –
6
Base The base is the number that is being multiplied by itself repeatedly. The base is the factor. More Examples – 3 4 Base = 3 17 5 Base = 17
7
Exponent The exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base by itself repeatedly. Examples:
8
Write the expression using exponents (-2) x (-2) x (-2) x 3 x 3 x 3
9
Write the expression using exponents a b b a b
10
a 2 + b 3 a = 5, b = 3 Step #1: Write the problem Step #2: Erase the a and substitute a 5. Erase the b and substitute a 3. Step #3: Evaluate exponents. Step #4: Add.
11
a 2 + b 4 a = 3, b = 2 Step #1: Write the problem Step #2: Erase the a and substitute a 3. Erase the b and substitute a 2. Step #3: Evaluate exponents. Step #4: Add.
12
Evaluate the expression If a = 3 and b = 5 ( a – b ) 2
