Earth Day’s Global 2016 Theme: Trees For The Earth. Over the next five years, as Earth Day moves closer to its 50th anniversary, they are calling for us to help them achieve one of their most ambitious goals yet — they are planting 7.8 billion trees and starting now. Our planet is currently losing over 15 Billion trees each year (equivalent to 48 football fields every minute). In honour of Earth Day’s 50th anniversary in 2020, Earth Day Network announced Trees for the Earth, a plan to plant 7.8 Billion trees by Earth Day 2020: one tree for every person on the planet. Trees will be the first of five major goals they are undertaking in honour of the five-year countdown to the campaigns 50th anniversary. On their own and together, these initiatives will make a significant and measurable impact on the Earth and will serve as the foundation of a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable planet for all.

Earth Day reminds us that we are all stewards and protectors of the environment, and thus, it’s on each of us to ensure that the world our children will inherit will be a healthy and beautiful one. To support Earth Day our school is creating and enhancing the current garden in order for it to be used as a place of worship, peace and reflection. All forms will contribute to the garden by growing and planting a plant. Last year, the Pope addressed environmental issues on Earth Day! The video is at the bottom of the page on the below link. http://www.earthday.org/earth-day/earth-day-toolkit/#faith
