Names and Formulas Remember covalent bonding occurs between two non- metals There are three rule to naming these compounds: 1.They end in –ide just like ionic compounds 2.The name usually begins with the element to the left on the periodic table 3.Use prefixes to specify the number of atoms of each element present in the molecule Note: mono is only used for the second element

Nitrogen and Oxygen These elements combine to form a number of oxides: NO – Nitrogen monoxide N 2 O – Dinitrogen monoxide NO 2 - Nitrogen dioxide N 2 O 3 – Dinitrogen trioxide N 2 O 4 – Dinitrogen tetroxide N 2 O 5 – Dinitrogen pentoxide
