Became president after William McKinley was assassinated in 1901. Roosevelt believed that businesses, workers, and consumers should get fair and honest treatment.

Square Deal: focused on regulating big business and protecting workers and consumers. Roosevelt also believed that he should act in the best interest of the people, since he was president.

Taft and Roosevelt were very different people. Taft wanted to limit power to corporations and add more land to the national forests.

Theodore Roosevelt decided to run as a candidate of a third party against Taft and Woodrow Wilson. Woodrow Wilson won the election of 1912 because of this.

Pure Food and Drug Act: Required meat inspections. Established the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to test and approve drugs before they were sold to people.
