Environmental Science Chapter 19 Review Bacteria – used to help clean up toxic spills Composting – keeps yard waste out of landfills Deep-well Injection – dry layers of rock below ground level Green Plastic – sugars from plants Love Canal – toxic waste site Methane – usually pumped out of landfills for use as fuels
2
Environmental Science Chapter 19 Review Nonbiodegradable – cannot be broken down by natural means Paper – makes up most of the municipal solid waste Plastic Liners – protects groundwater near landfills Solid Waste – has doubled since the 1960s
3
Environmental Science Chapter 19 Review Rotting meat and other food waste is not considered as hazardous waste. Composting could reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. Consumers can make an effort to buy products made from recycled materials to make sure more materials are recycled. Only 5% of the energy needed to make aluminum cans from ore is needed to make recycled aluminum cans from used aluminum cans.
4
Environmental Science Chapter 19 Review Modern Landfills -chemicals leaking out of waste may pollute wells/ground water -explosive gases can be produced and move to nearby basements -buried materials take many years to decompose -manufacturing produces the most solid waste -paper products make up the largest % of waste produced by homes and businesses
5
Environmental Science Chapter 19 Review Degradable plastics -designed to deteriorate by sunlight exposure -contain sugars for soil bacteria to breakdown Deep-well injection stores some hazardous waste in layers of dry rock below the water table. Superfund Act – EPA can sue companies that dump hazardous waste illegally in the U.S.
6
Environmental Science Chapter 19 Review Incinerators for burning wastes -some waste doesn’t burn -can give off toxic gases/particles even with scrubbers -still have to dispose of ash left
7
Environmental Science Chapter 19 Review Essays 1-Disadvantage of building a new landfill near a city 2-Disadvantage of building a new landfill far from the city 3-Advantage of degradable plastics 4- Disadvantage of degradable plastics
