THE EARLY HEBREWS Judaism – the Hebrews religion Abraham The Hebrew bible traces back to him Lived in Mesopotamia Told by God to move to Canaan Received God’s promise that his descendants would become a mighty nation.

THE EARLY HEBREWS Moses Lived in Egypt Told by God to gain freedom of Hebrew slaves and led them from Egypt Led his people out of Egypt on a journey called the Exodus Received the Ten Commandments from God on Mt. Sinai

JEWISH BELIEFS Monotheism – the belief in only one God Torah – the most sacred text of Judaism Synagogue – Jewish house of worship Prophets – are groups of people who are said to receive messages from God to be taught to others. Talmud – set of commentaries and lessons for everyday life.

TRADITIONS AND HOLY DAYS Hanukkah Honors the rededication of the Second Temple during the revolt of Maccabees Passover A time for Jews to remember the Exodus High Holy Days Rosh Hashanah- Jewish New Year Yom Kippur ask God for forgiveness Considered the most holy day
