Zero Property of Multiplication Only works for multiplication Any number multiplied by zero will always be zero Examples: 4 x 0 = 0 0 x 567= 0
3
Distribute means to give out Who wants an 8? Distributive Property Examples: 27 x 4 = (20 x 4) + ( 7 x 4) 3 x 48= (3 x 40) + (3 x 8) *Break apart ONE of the factors to make the multiplication problem easier to solve.* You can break apart numbers in multiplication problems to make the problems easier to solve. Break apart method!
4
Commutative Property Only works for multiplication and addition! The ORDER of the numbers does not change the sum of an addition problem of the product of a multiplication problem. Addition: a + b = b + a 6 + 3 = 3 + 6 Multiplication c x d = d x c 3 x 8 = 8 x 3
5
Identity Property A number added to zero or multiplied by one is equal to the same number Addition a + 0 = a 15 + 0 =15 Multiplication f x 1 = f 4 x 1 =4 Think of your identity, there is only one of you! You always stay the same.
6
Associative Property Only works for multiplication and addition The GROUPING of the numbers does not change the sum of an addition problem or the product of a multiplication problem. Addition (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4) 5 + 4 = 2 + 7 9 = 9 Multiplication (a x b) x c = a x (b x c) (3 x 2 ) x 5 = 3 x (2 x 5) 6 x 5 = 3 x 10 30 = 30 Associative Property is similar to Associating with different groups of people.
