To solve any equation, use the inverse operation to “undo” the operation one step at a time. The inverse of addition (+) is subtraction ( ─ ). The inverse of multiplication ( × ) is division ( ÷ ). Think Opposites!

There are four “Properties of Equality” which are used to solve any equation. If you subtract the same number from each side of an equation, the two sides remain equal. Subtraction Property of Equality If you divide each side of an equation by a non-zero number, the two sides remain equal. Division Property of Equality If you multiply each side of an equation by the same number, the two sides remain equal. Multiplication Property of Equality If you add the same number to each side of an equation, the two sides remain equal. Addition Property of Equality

Properties are statements that are true for any number. It is important to know what expressions are equivalent.
