Analysis for Soft-Spectrum Sources Gary Walker Los Alamos National Laboratory

But First: Significance Problems Significances for Gaussian smoothed maps are off slightly: The Cause: BinSize = 0.1° (smoothing already done) Outside ROI: offw2corrected too big Inside ROI: α too small Solution: Factor correct α into Gaussian weighting code? (Other suggestions?) Smoothing Factor (σ) = 0.9° Fit Width = 0.93 Fit Width = 1.08 Smoothing Factor (σ) = 0.9°

Back to Soft-Spectrum Weighting A4 is most effective at higher energies – current weighted analysis has median energy of ~12 TeV Use x2 instead: x2 > 2.5 has median energy of ~3 TeV Use Andy’s x2-nFit slices, derive weights appropriate for soft spectra Gamma sim affected by change to multi-layer fitter, but not really proton sim or real data Removal of baffles, change to 603 calibration seen in real data – not really reflected in either simulation
4
Weights for Various Spectra Weights derived by comparing gamma simulation to real data COM, OFF, and ORCOM are nearly the same – use ORCOM for all
5
Test the Weights: Continuous Spectra -2.0 Spectrum -2.6 Spectrum -3.0 Spectrum MGRO 2019 seems to like hard spectra Crab and Mrk 421 seem to do better with soft spectra
6
Test the Weights: Cutoff -2.0 Spectrum, With Exponential Cutoff at 4.3 TeV -2.0 Spectrum, With Exponential Cutoff at 4.3 TeV Cutoff seems to hurt Crab, MGRO 2019, but may help Mrk 421 Weights derived from gamma sim and real data may not be optimum, but they seem reasonable. (Other suggestions?)
7
Some Other Comparisons Andy’s Weights (no inter-epoch scaling) Unweighted (Gaussian smoothed) Unweighted and Unsmoothed
8
Conclusion Very much a work in progress Weights derived from gamma simulation and real data seem reasonable Would be nice to account for the removal of the baffles and the 603 calibration, which the simulation seems to miss I’m open to suggestions Gaussian smoothing produces substantial improvement by itself But accurate weights should improve our sensitivity even more How many spectral schemes do we want to consider?
