PS5: Changes in Matter & Energy Investigate and understand changes in matter and the relationship of these changes to the Law of Conservation of Matter, including: A. Physical changes B. Chemical changes C. Nuclear reactions
2
Learning Objectives: I will… 1. Compare and contrast chemical and physical changes Language Objectives: I will… 1. Read about chemical and physical changes and write notes and definitions to vocabulary 2. Discuss with a partner the difference between chemical and physical changes
3
Key Vocabulary Chemical Change Physical Change Chemical Reaction Endothermic Exothermic Mass Chemical Equation Reactants Products Fission Fusion
4
Changes… p. 251 Matter can undergo changes. 2 types: Physical changes Chemical changes
5
Physical Changes Any change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but does NOT change it into another substance THE COMPOSITION OF THE SUBSTANCE DOES NOT CHANGE Examples: cutting paper, crushing can, melting, freezing, boiling
6
Think Pair Share: Even#: What is a physical change? Odd #: Give as many examples of a physical change as you can.
7
Chemical Changes A change in matter that produces one or more new substances The atoms rearrange to form a new substance Chemical bonds break and new ones formed It results in different physical properties than the original substances Substances that undergo the chemical changes are called reactants. The new substances formed are products.
8
SUHUPU: Taller person: What is a chemical change? Vertically challenged person: Give as many examples of a chemical change as you can.
9
Chemical & Physical Changes Sort Activity Sort the cards into appropriate categories. Once you have all the cards placed, copy down your results in your notes.
10
Evidence of a Chemical Reaction Formation of a Precipitate A solid that forms from liquids during a chemical reaction Ex: lemon juice & milk Gas is Produced Often seen as bubbles Example: vinegar and baking soda
11
Evidence, cont. Color Change Often signals a new substance has formed Ex: apple or avocado turning brown
12
Think-Write-Round Robin In your notes, write down two times you have observed a chemical reaction. Explain how you know a chemical reaction took place. When told to, share with your table in a round- robin fashion.
13
Changes in Energy When bonds are broken, energy is required. When bonds are formed, energy is released. Exothermic Reaction: energy is released Usually felt as heat Think: Exo – Heat EXITS Endothermic Reaction: energy is absorbed from nearby matter Usually felt as cold Think: Endo – Heat IN
