INFSO-RI-508833 Enabling Grids for E-sciencE www.eu-egee.org GOCDB2 Matt Thorpe / Philippa Strange RAL, UK

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 2 GOCDB history Originally designed as a tool to automate the creation of configuration scripts for monitoring tools Globally accessible web interface over HTTPS secure connection with any EGEE certificate Also exposes MySQL server on goc.grid-support.ac.uk for use by third party tools (read only access unless you apply for a MySQL account from the GOC team) Working towards the GOCDB being a single reliable source of data for the EGEE project

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 3 Data stored in GOCDB Site information –Sitename, GIIS name, telephone and email contact details, country….. Contact information –Name, contact details Node information –Node type, hostname, IP address Organisational structure information –Contains a tree structure of the EGEE organisation –Allows GOC tools to provide reports or functions based on a ROC or other logical grouping of sites –Covered in later slides

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 4 Tools using the GOCDB GOCDB SFTs IN2P3 CIC portal GSTAT Real Time Grid Monitor

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 5 New features of GOCDB2 Main feature is a new roles based authentication system –Roles are granted to contacts to grant permissions –Roles system is expandable to contain new roles and permissions Extra functions now exposed for ROC staff –Creating new sites –Managing status of existing sites (production status, monitoring status etc) Other improvements –Many bugfixes! –SQL transaction support –UI improvements

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 6 Roles system GOCDB Contact Role (ROC manager) Role (Site admin) Role (…) A single contact may have zero to many associated roles. Permissions are granted on a role basis. Each role has a ‘scope’ – an entry point in the organisational structure under which that role is granted.

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 7 Organisational structures The structure of EGEE and its ROCs and subgroups are stored within the GOCDB in a tree like format. This structure is currently managed by GOC staff. It enables Operations to be performed on groups of sites as well as single sites.

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 8 System architecture MySQL 4.x database with transaction support –GOCDB2 now fully supports transactions for enhanced data integrity –Contact GOC team if you want your tool to link directly to the MySQL database PHP 4 front end interface Apache 2.x web server Gridsite security layer –Grants HTTPS access only to EGEE recognised certificate holders –Does not map users to roles, this is a function provided by GOCDB

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 9 Site certification GOCDB2 adds the concept of a ‘certified status’ for sites –Candidate:  Site is still being established and may or may not provide all required services. –Uncertified:  Site is established and should be providing all services, but has not yet passed certification tests. –Certified:  A site is set as certified it has passed testing. ROC managers can change the status of their sites through the ROC management page. When initially created, sites are set to ‘Candidate’. This should be changed to ‘Uncertified’ once all contacts and nodes have been entered into the GOCDB.

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 10 Production vs Pre-Production Sites can either be classed as being in the Production Grid (PG) or Pre-Production Service (PPS) Sites in the PG are monitored by the SFT, whereas PPS sites are not –So that CODs will not see failures for PPS Different tests for the PPS / gLite are under development Current implementation of this flag in the GOCDB is being improved to aid clarity

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 11 Forthcoming features Site placement system –Allows ROC staff to place new sites on the GOC regional monitoring maps and rearrange existing sites –Achieved by a java applet accessed through the GOCDB interface –Expected June/July 2005

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 12 Forthcoming features (II) Structure management system –Allows ROC staff to create subgroups within their own ROC in order to group sites –Runs as a java applet –Expected June/July 2005

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 13 Forthcoming features (III) Page dedicated to CIC operations (similar to that already provided for ROC staff) Email alerting on events and downtimes Enhanced views for GOCDB data, in particular site downtime information Distributed databases with replication and backup user interfaces should the main service fail

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI-508833 Operations workshop - Bologna, 24-25 May 2005 14 Feedback GOCDB is under constant development and we appreciate all feedback from users We will add a link to all GOCDB pages to allow you to send us feedback. Please provide as much information as possible if you are reporting a bug, a screenshot may also help! We maintain a page that details the feedback that we have received: –http://goc.grid-support.ac.uk/gridsite/gocdb/gocdb2- feedback.htmlhttp://goc.grid-support.ac.uk/gridsite/gocdb/gocdb2- feedback.html
