6 Uncertainty vs. Risk One policy under consideration is a flexible, 3-part strategy that could be modified over time: Research to resolve uncertainties about potential damage and to develop technologies that might cut the cost of reducing emissions or be helpful in adapting to a warmer climate; Economic incentives to encourage inexpensive reductions in emissions today, with the expectation that more extensive reductions may be merited in the future; and Policies that would facilitate adaptation, thus lowering the cost of any warming that did occur

8 Reminder: Final project The Final Project consists of a paper in which you will contrast the perspectives of two groups: an industrial society and a native culture (not assimilated), in their relationship with the environment. Use the following lists to locate your societies and choose one from each list: Industrial Nations Native societies United States Sioux Indians 1850 Brazil Amazon Indian Tribes France African Bushman Australia Australian Bushman China Eskimo Arctic tribes Canada Borneo tribes

9 Reminder: Final project Include these elements in making your contrasts and comparisons: The environmental values of your two societies The positive and negative impacts each makes on their local and global ecology The effects of their resource consumption on sustainability of their ecosystems The extent to which their population size and pollution practices influence their ecosystems
