2 GRAMMAR SNIPPET: VERB TENSE REVIEW 1/19/16  Directions: Identify any verbs that create a shift in verb tense from the tense that is first established in the sentence, and write the correct tense of the verb.  When he kicked the ball into the net, the fans go wild.  Yesterday, Rebecca was told to remove her wet boots before she enters the kitchen, but she walks in without removing them anyway.  When you have the chance to see Ronny for yourself, you should have seen that I do not exaggerate about the amount of weight he had lost.  Every morning when the alarm clock rings, I yawned, stretched and roll over for an extra five minutes of sleep.  Katie will plan a trip to visit the Museum of Natural History next weekend so that she attended a lecture about the healing powers of snake venom.

3 OBJECTIVE, AGENDA, HOMEWORK  Objective: Students will apply the definitions of logos, pathos, and ethos to identify examples of each in a variety of genres.  Agenda:  Grammar Snippet: Verb Tense Review  Latin Roots  Collect Works Cited and Check Books  Highlight Articles for Logos, Pathos, and Ethos  Homework:  Highlighted articles and mind maps due Friday, January 22.  Latin roots 6-10 due Monday, January 25.

4 THE WEEK AHEAD  Tuesday, January 19: highlight 2 articles  Wednesday, January 20: begin mind maps  Thursday, January 21: highlight last 2 articles  Friday, January 22: work on info-graphics while checking 6 highlighted articles and 2 mind maps

5 LATIN ROOTS  Submit Latin roots 1-5.  1. circum = around  2. con = with, together  3. contra, contro = against  4. de = from, away  5. post = after, behind, later Copy Latin roots 6-10 onto page 1 of the notebook. 6. e, ex = out of, from, very 7. pre = before 8. sub = under, below 9. super = above, over 10. trans = across

6 ETHOS NOTES (PG. 46)  The Ethical Appeal (Credibility)  This is an appeal to ethics.  It is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader.  We tend to believe people whom we respect.  Research, facts, first-hand experience, etc. can be examples of ethos.

7 LOGOS NOTES (PG. 46 OF NOTEBOOK)  The Logical Appeal  This is an appeal to logic.  It is a way of persuading an audience by use of reason.  Facts, statistics, data, etc. can be examples of logos.

8 PATHOS NOTES (PG. 46)  The Emotional Appeal  This is an appeal to emotion.  It is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response.  Stories, anecdotes, personal accounts, etc. can be examples of pathos.

9 WORK TIME  With the 3 highlighters, highlight examples of logos, pathos, and ethos in the four articles your printed last week. You will tape these into your notebook into the RESEARCH NOTES section.
