1
Using Technology throughout a Lesson Harnessing the Unique Powers
2
Let’s dispel some myths about “using technology”... It doesn’t have to “be” the whole lesson. It doesn’t have to mean kids sitting in front of computers. You don’t have to use technology for every lesson.
3
Goal/ Objective (Why?) Student Uses* (What?) Teacher Uses** (What?) Placement in Lesson Sequence (When?) Location (Where?) Development (How?) Learning Structures (Who?) large group small group individual anticipatory set content input guided practice individual practice closure teacher- developed student- developed adapted from existing online community computer lab classroom practice problem solving research communication productivity planning teaching assessing productivity/ management professional practice/ communi- cation
4
Anticipatory Set show a relevant photograph found on the Internet conduct a brainstorming session with a concept mapping software check prior knowledge about the subject by posing a series of questions beamed to students’ handheld computers
5
Purpose project up for the whole class an electronic slide that states the purpose print the information for students to monitor their own progress
6
Input –Educational websites –Videos –Interactive electronic presentations –Teacher-produced documents –Digital photographs –Collaborative team- driven environment
7
Modeling Document camera to demonstrate a process Items in previous students’ electronic portfolios as examples Live demonstration of any software that will be used
8
Guided Practice Printed tutorials can include screen captures, and online tutorials can include audio and motion Software with pop-ups and help options can guide with pointers Peers can record directions for each other on digital recorders
9
Checking For Understanding Teachers can walk around computer lab and glance at’ computer monitors to assess progress. Students can come to the front to lead peers through an electronic presentation. As teachers check for understanding, they can jot down brief notes of student progress on a handheld or tablet computer.
10
Independent Practice Practice homework activities might be listed on the class website Educational software allows for leveled, repeated, patient practice Non-linear PowerPoint games attract students’ attention to repeatedly review content. Productivity software allows students to synthesize and produce new knowledge
11
Closure Recording what students have learned on a word processing document or electronic slide show to the whole class to ensure everyone has input. Individual students email the teacher with their own understanding.
12
So, when is it “right” to use technology? It depends...
