1 COLD WAR TIMELINE BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE EACH EVENT

2 COLD WAR TIMELINE  THE COLD WAR IS ABOUT A NUCLEAR WEAPONS ARMS RACE SO LETS BEGIN AT: AUGUST 1945 THE UNITED STATES DROPS FIRST NUCLEAR WEAPON ON JAPAN.  WORLD WAR 2 ENDS WHEN JAPAN SIGNS PEACE TREATY IN SEPTEMBER OF 1945

3 COLD WAR TIMELINE  United Nations Atomic Energy Commission plans to ban all weapons of mass destruction in January of 1946.  President Executive Order #9981 July 1948.  Berlin Blockade is first test of the Cold War as American planes send supplies to West Berliners in June 1948 to May 1949.  NATO is organized to fight back any aggressive nations who are planning to develop &/or use nuclear weapons in April of 1949.  The Soviets test their first nuclear weapon in August of 1949.

4 Cold War Timeline  Presidential Executive Order 9981 (July of 1948) demanded racial equality and opportunity for all persons in the armed services.  The factor that influence President Truman to sign the order was because of the continued discrimination at home after the fighting by minorities in WWII.

6 COLD WAR TIMELINE  Korean War breaks out from June,1950 to July, 1953  Warsaw Pact is created in response to NATO on May of 1955  Mr Bone is born in August of 1956  Sputnik launched into orbit October 1957

7 COLD WAR TIMELINE  Fidel Castro becomes Communist Dictator of Cuba in February of 1959.  “Bay of Pigs” incident occurs on April of 1961.  Berlin Wall construction begins also 1961  Cuban Missile Crisis October 1962.

8 The Cold War Can you read this graph? 1) What years did both countries have the same number of missiles? 2) How many missiles did the Soviets have in 1989? The U.S.? 3) When did the U.S. have the most missiles? How many did we have? 4) How many missiles did each have at the end of the Cold War?

9 COLD WAR TIMELINE  Gulf of Tonkin incident America’s involvement in Viet Nam intensifies 1964  South Viet Nam falls to the Communist 1975  Superpowers remove medium & short range nuclear missiles 1986  Berlin Wall falls.  Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, & Romania declare independence from Soviet Union. 1989  Germany united 1990  End of the Soviet Union & the Cold War 1991 (end of Era 8)
