2 Prose ordinary speech or writing, without metrical structure; uses sentences and paragraphs Poetry a piece of literature written in meter; verse Alliteration The repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables Connotation An implied definition of a word in addition to its literal meaning Denotation The most specific or direct meaning of a word; in contrast to its figurative or associated meanings. Figurative language speech or writing that departs from literal meaning in order to achieve a special effect or meaning, speech or writing employing figures of speech

3 Free verse An irregular form of poetry in which the content is free of traditional rules of versification—freedom from fixed meter or rhyme Genre A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, marked by a distinctive style, form, or content HyperboleExtravagant exaggeration Language which describes something in detail, using words to substitute for and create sensory stimulation, including visual imagery and sound imagery Imagery

4 Lyric poetry A type of emotional songlike poetry Metaphor Compares two different things as if they are the same, without using comparison words such as like or as Mood the general sense or feeling which the reader is supposed to get from the text A poem that tells a story and has a plot Narrativ e poetry

5 Onomatopoeia The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of sound associated with it (such as: buzz or hiss) Personification Giving human qualities to nonhuman or abstract things Rhythm The pattern of beats, or stresses, in spoken or written language Comparison of two different things using comparing words such as like or as Simile Stanza A division or section of a poem named for the quantity of lines it contains

6 Style The distinctive way that a poet uses language, including word choice, line length, figurative language, and imagery Symbolism The use of a symbol such as a word or object that stands for another word or object Theme The main idea or message conveyed by the piece The attitude of the narrator; not the attitude of author or audience Tone Ballad a relatively short narrative poem, written to be sung, with a simple and dramatic action

7 Epic A long, serious poem that tells the story of a heroic figure Sonnet A 14-line verse form usually having one of several conventional rhyme schemes Quatrains A four-line stanza; lines 2 and 4 must rhyme; lines 1 and 3 may or may not rhyme A group of six lines of poetrySestet Rhyme Two or more words with the same or similar sound

10 Allusion A reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature Acrostic Poetry Poem where the first letter of each line spells out a significant word Tongue twister A word or group of words difficult to articulate rapidly, usually because of a succession of similar consonantal sounds A light, humorous poem of five lines with the rhyme scheme of aabba Limerick Couplets Two lines of poetry that rhyme and usually contain one complete idea
