Driving Forces and Restraining Forces of the Organizational Force Field All problem situations, regardless of the specific kind of problem, have the same general structure. The three elements of this structure are: 1) the problem state 2) the solved state, and 3) the solution path. home.att.net/~nickols/force_field_analysis.gif

What is Force Field Analysis? Force field analysis is one of the most influential developments in the field of social science. Force field analysis provides a framework for looking at the factors (forces) that influence a situation, originally social situations. It looks at forces that are either driving movement toward a goal (helping forces) or blocking movement toward a goal (hindering forces). The principle, developed by Kurt Lewin, is a significant contribution to the fields of social science, psychology, social psychology, organizational development, process management, and change management.goalKurt Lewinsocial sciencepsychologysocial psychologyorganizational developmentprocess managementchange management Lewin K. Force Field Analysis – Analyzing Change Factors Force field analysis is useful when looking at the variables involved in planning and implementing a change program and overcoming resistance to change. Driving Forces Driving forces are those forces affecting a situation that are pushing in a particular direction; they tend to initiate a change and keep it going. Restraining Forces Restraining forces are forces acting to restrain or decrease the driving forces * Technique developed by Kurt Lewin, a pioneer in the field of social sciences

Institutionalized Thinking Inhibits Change “That’s the way we do things around here.” “That’ll never work; we already tried that.” “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” “Changes mean more training, how much is my job going to change?” “This is just the “flavor of the day, just wait and this will new initiative will fade away.” “When things change, people lose their job!”

Clarifying Analysis Type Questions What would happen if… How would that (idea) work? What would happen in your job if you do… How would that outcome affect/influence your work? If you could have anything you asked for regarding this change, what would you want? What do you see as an impact of implementing this change?
