3 Overview A piece of electronic equipment for continual observation of the function of the heart In today’s world, Different types of microcontroller is being used to develop a heart rate monitor. Example: 8051 μC. DIGITAL HEART RATE MONITOR AT HOSPITAL In Smartphone In Smartwatch

4 Theory ▪ Heart rate measurement indicates the soundness of the human cardiovascular system. ▪ It uses a technique to measure the heart rate by sensing the change in blood volume in an artery while the heart is pumping the blood. ▪ It consists of an infrared LED (or force sensors) that transmits an IR signal through the fingertip of the subject, a part of which is reflected by the blood cells. ▪ The reflected signal is detected by a photo diode sensor. ▪ The changing blood volume with heartbeat results in a train of pulses at the output. ▪ After filtering and amplifying the data, Microcontroller counts the heart rate.

5 How Does It Works (Block Diagram)

6 Internal Procedure I ▪ This device features three force sensors which capture the heart beat signal. It can be also implemented by an IR sensor. ▪ An AC Coupler is used to remove any difference in constant pressure between the sensors. ▪ This signal will need to be amplified with an amplifying circuit prior to being read by an A/D converter. ▪ A low-pass RC filter with a cut-off frequency of 15Hz is used to remove most of the unwanted noise.

7 Internal Procedure II ▪ The received analog signals will be converted to a digital signal via an A/D converter. ▪ Then the digital signal will be processed by the microcontroller and provide the appropriate data for a computer output. ▪ The computer can show the output in different types of display. ▪ The output can be in graphical format or in numerical BPM (beats per minute)

9 Applications of Heart Rate Monitor ▪ Continuous observation of the critical patient in Hospital. ▪ Determining the risk of heart attack or strokes. ▪ Health app in smartwatch and smartphones to keep body healthy and fit. Example: Samsung S Health. ▪ It can be used to track sleeping record or physical exercise statistics.
