The Cochrane Library New Search Functionality

The Cochrane Library brings together research on the effectiveness of healthcare treatments and interventions. Produced by The Cochrane Collaboration, a not-for- profit organisation whose aim is to improve healthcare worldwide, The Cochrane Library is the ‘gold standard’ in Evidence-Based Health Care and provides access to the highest quality, independent information on existing and new healthcare interventions. It is based on the practice of evidence based medicine. The Cochrane Library consists of seven databases and is used by a broad range of people interested in Evidence-Based Health Care, including consumers, clinicians, policy-makers, researchers, educators and students.

Who develops the Cochrane Library? The Cochrane Library is published by Wiley for The Cochrane Collaboration. The Cochrane Collaboration is an international not-for-profit organization: Aim: to help people make well-informed decisions about health care. What can you do with The Cochrane Library? Use: For improved patient care and outcomes. Based on the best available evidence which have been proven in practice. The Cochrane Library databases 1. The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (Cochrane Reviews) A systematic review investigates the effectiveness of interventions for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in health care. Now includes reviews of diagnostic test accuracy studies. Now updated monthly! 2. The Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (Other reviews) Complements Cochrane Reviews by quality-assessing and summarising reviews which have not been carried out by The Cochrane Collaboration. www.thecochranelibrary.com

The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Clinical trials) Includes details of published articles taken from bibliographic databases – such as MEDLINE and EMBASE - and other published sources. 4. The Cochrane Library databases 5. Methodology Register (Methods Studies) Presents a bibliography of publications that report on methods used when conducting controlled trials. 6. NHS Economic Evaluation Database (Economic Evaluations) Systematically identifies economic evaluations of healthcare interventions from around the world, appraises their quality and highlights their relative strengths and weaknesses. www.thecochranelibrary.com

What is a systematic review? A systematic review identifies an intervention or treatment for a specific disease or other problem in health care Identifies and includes all up-to-date and relevant studies and trials Determines whether or not the intervention or treatment works www.thecochranelibrary.com

What to consider when reading reviews Do the studies address a sensible clinical question? Do the studies possess high quality designs and methods? Are the results from the studies similar or widely different? Are all relevant and important outcomes considered? Are the conclusions drawn consistent with the method employed? Cochrane Podcasts summarise and discuss the latest Cochrane Reviews through interviews with Cochrane authors. The Cochrane Library launched the podcast programme in January 2008 and now hosts over 200 podcast summaries. The podcasts are aimed at everyone interested in Cochrane Reviews, and have been written with non- professional listeners in mind. Cochrane Journal Club is a free, monthly publication started by The Cochrane Library in 2009. Each issue introduces a recent Cochrane Review, together with relevant background information, a podcast, discussion questions to help you to explore the review methods and findings in more detail, and downloadable PowerPoint slides containing key figures and tables. You can even contact the review authors with your questions. Aimed at trainees, researchers and clinicians for self-learning or for presenting and discussing a Cochrane Review during a Journal Club meeting. The Cochrane Collaboration’s Evidence Aid project was established following the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in December 2004. Evidence Aid highlights evidence from The Cochrane Library showing which interventions work, which don’t work and which might be harmful. The information is aimed at disaster relief agencies and people planning for, and responding to, disasters.
