3 David Finley / LArTPC VidCon / June 22, 2006 @ Fermilab Slide 3 The Ultimate Detector Assumptions for beginning the ultimate step: –A timely, cutting edge physics justification Examples may be: Neutrino oscillations, proton decay, supernovae, etc –A project with well-understood technical capabilities and costs for a 50 to 100 kton TPC liquid argon detector –An international collaboration which proposes to international funding agencies locating one or more detectors: Under rock/dirt in Europe, the Americas, Asia or elsewhere On the surface anywhere on the planet (including in a neutrino beam)

4 David Finley / LArTPC VidCon / June 22, 2006 @ Fermilab Slide 4 The Penultimate Detector There may be many examples for a penultimate detector, but they all have these criteria: –A compelling physics experiment justifies the penultimate detector –The relationship of the penultimate detector to determining the costs and scalability of the technology to the ultimate detector must be clear. –The penultimate detector is part of a globally coordinated neutrino physics program. For example: 3 kton* LArTPC on-axis in NuMI beam. Physics Case? –theta_13, theta_23, mass hierarchy, CP? … complementary to NOvA * active mass

5 David Finley / LArTPC VidCon / June 22, 2006 @ Fermilab Slide 5 Ongoing (or near term) Steps There are several on-going steps some of which will be brought to successful conclusions as development of the Penultimate Detector matures. The successes of these steps can be used to build confidence in the international collaboration working towards the penultimate and ultimate detectors. Some of these are: Establish the physics case in a global context –T600 at ICARUS –Penultimate and Ultimate detector designs –Monte Carlo Simulation –Reconstruction and Pattern Recognition –Warm and cold electronics development –TPC development (such as cellular design, light collection, etc) –~150 ton cross section measurements –~50 ton nu_e and nu_mu events in high intensity –et cetera
